Motor vehicle and drivers license information

What you need to know...

  • Effective Aug. 1, 2019, a $2.25 registration technology surcharge is due with every registration renewal.
  • A registration period is for 12 months. There are 12 registration periods in a year, each designated by a calendar month (January, February, March, April, etc.). There are two exceptions:

    • Daily Rental Vehicles - Licensed Minnesota dealers have the option to register passenger class vehicles that are used for daily rental purposes for as few as 4 months or as many as 16 months. (See Daily Rental for information on how to calculate tax)

    • Leased Vehicles - Lease customers have the option to register passenger class vehicles so that the month of expiration coincides with the lease end date. (See Leased Vehicles for more information.)

  •  The date of initial registration determines the month of expiration. The registration period begins on the first day of the month in which registration is first due and ends on the last day of the 12th month from the date of commencing. For example: If registration first becomes due in April, the registration period is April 1 through March 31 of the following year.

  • New plates or stickers shall be displayed within 10 days of the first day of the month which commences the next registration period. For example: if registration expires on March 31, the vehicle owner has until April 10 to display the renewed registration.
