New Resident

New residents have a 60-day grace period in which to register their cars, passenger vans, 3/4 ton or less pickups, motorcycles, utility trailers, or house trailers provided the license plates displayed on the vehicle are current.
The 60-day grace DOES NOT apply to trucks of one ton or more, non-passenger vans, truck-tractors, and trailers other than utility.
What you need to know:
  • Minnesota Registration tax is computed from the date of application or 60-days after the vehicle entered Minnesota, whichever is first. So, if a new resident applies before the end of the 60-day grace period, collect registration from the month of application. You may advise a customer to wait until the 60-day grace period is up before applying for Minnesota registration.
  • If the foreign state registration expired before the vehicle entered Minnesota, collect registration tax from the date the vehicle entered Minnesota.
  • If the foreign state registration expires before the end of the 60-day grace period, collect registration tax from the date the registration expired.
Tax Computation:
  • If the 60-day grace period expires on or before the 15th day of the month, registration begins with the month of application.
  • If the 60-day grace period expires after the 15th day of the month, the remainder of that month shall be deemed to be within the 60-day period. Registration tax is due from the first day of the following month.
EXAMPLES:
A new Minnesota resident has a vehicle that displays current registration issued by another state.
  • Grace Period: Vehicle entered Minnesota on July 15 so the 60-day grace period expires on September 12

  • Registration: Tax is due beginning September 1
