Prorate Class to T or Y Class

Conversion - Prorate Class to T or Y Class

    1. Verify following information on vehicle record:

  • Registration class
  • Gross weight
  • Registration tax paid
  • Deletion from Prorate Fleet. The record displays a "D" flag and the date of deletion.

     2. Have customer complete an Application for Minnesota Title/Registration (PS2000)

  • Section A – complete in full, include the empty weight. If the vehicle is registered over 73,280 pounds, complete the axle declaration (5 or 6).
  • Section D – indicate the date and exact time of the change, the date the change expires, the current class and weight, and the new class and weight. Record the conversion fee, plate fee, registration tax and filing fee in the fee area. The applicant must sign.

     3. To compute registration tax:

  • Prorate registration expired – charge Y or T class registration from the date of expiration. Registration tax may be charged at 1¼ times the empty weight for the months the vehicle was not used.
  • Prorate registration current (no delete flag on record) – charge Y or T class registration from the date of application.
  • “D” delete flag on record – charge Y or T class registration from the delete date. Registration tax may be charged at 1¼ times the empty weight for the months the vehicle was not used.

     4. Validate all copies of the PS2000. The applicant's copy serves as a temporary registration/cab card.

     5. Indicate "Conversion" in the upper right corner of the application.

     6. Issue new plates, year validation and weight stickers for the new registration class.

 


Conversion - Y or T Class to Prorate Class

 

Applications for prorate registration are made at a Prorate Deputy Registrar or through the DVS Prorate office located at Town Square in St. Paul.

The vehicle owner may elect to apply for a refund of any remaining Y or T class registration tax or apply the tax credit to the Prorate account. Credit will only be applied if the license plates on the vehicle are surrendered.

To apply for a refund, have the customer complete a Claim for Motor Vehicle Refund (PS2511).

  1. Section A - the applicant must complete and sign.

  2. Section B - the deputy or Prorate office must mark the appropriate box as well as entering the current registration class, the new registration class, and the date of conversion.

  3. Section E - the deputy or Prorate office must indicate if the license plates were surrendered
