Returning from Active Military Duty

Reference: Minn. Stat. § 168.031

Military personnel returning home from active military duty may prorate the registration renewal of their vehicle, if it expired while they were on active duty. Vehicle owners have 90 days after discharge to register their vehicle.

  • Month of expiration remains the same.

  • Registration tax is due 90 days after discharge or from the date of application, whichever is sooner.

  • Attach to the renewal form a copy of applicant's military orders that indicate the period of active duty.

Example 1 - Customer is renewing registration in June 2007:

  • Minnesota registration expired December 2006.

  • Customer was discharged on February 1, 2007.

  • Customer owes 8 months registration tax (May to December - 90 days from February 1, is May 1).

Example 2 - Customer is renewing registration in April 2007:

  • Minnesota registration expired December 2006

  • Customer was discharged on February 1, 2007.

  • Customer owes 9 months registration tax (90 days from February 1, is May 1, but the application date is April so tax is charged from date of application.)
