Unperfected Lien

An unperfected lien is one where the owner never perfected the lender’s security interest in the vehicle by submitting the title with a signed grant. If the party defaults and the secured party has repossessed the vehicle they may obtain a certificate of title by:

  1. Submitting a certified copy of a court order that commands the Department of Public Safety to issue them a certificate, on vehicles that are six model years or newer. The order is submitted with the application for title and all fees.

  2. The Defective Title Bond procedure is followed for older vehicles (not six years or newer).
